Former Pakistan captain Moin Khan has expressed concern over his son Azam Khan’s treatment by Pakistan’s cricket management. Azam was dropped after one match at the T20 World Cup, where he played as a wicketkeeper-batter and scored a first-ball duck. Moin criticized the inconsistency in player development, emphasizing that Azam’s confidence was shaken by being sidelined so quickly. While acknowledging his son’s fitness struggles, Moin highlighted his efforts to improve.
Moin also voiced disappointment over Shaheen Shah Afridi’s removal as T20I captain, calling it “unjust” and advocating for leadership stability.
Moin acknowledged that Azam faced challenges regarding his fitness but pointed out that his son had been working hard to address those issues, undergoing rigorous training with his coach Shehzar Mohammad. He hoped Azam’s efforts would translate into improved performance on the field, especially given his recent participation in the Caribbean Premier League.
Moin also criticized the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for its handling of leadership changes. He believed Shaheen Shah Afridi was unfairly removed as T20I captain after a brief stint, despite being highly regarded by his teammates. Moin advocated for a single captain across all formats to provide stability and avoid disrupting team dynamics. He emphasized the importance of long-term leadership support, suggesting it would improve team performance.
He concluded by urging the PCB to reconsider their approach to both player development and captaincy, warning that frequent changes create instability and hinder the growth of promising players like Azam.
